The People’s Republic of China, ruled by the CCP (Chinese communist party), has set up re-education camps in the Xinjiang region, which they claim offer voluntary education and training. However, ex-inmates and leaked information suggest that these camps are systematically brainwashing Muslims in the lakhs.
One ex-inmate of these camps stated that they got hit by “an electric baton to the back of the head.” Official documents, which had been leaked to the ICIJ (International Consortium of Investigative Journalists), show that inmates are forced into camps, locked up, indoctrinated, and punished without trial. A 2017 memo in the leaked documents shows that Zhu Hailun, then deputy-secretary of Xinjiang’s Communist Party, sent orders to the re-education camps to “increase discipline and punishment of behavioral violations.”
Over 15,000 people from southern Xinjiang alone were sent to the camps in one week. Sophine Richards, the China director at HRW (Human Rights Watch), said “I think it's fair to describe everyone being detained as being subject at least to psychological torture because they literally don't know how long they're going to be there. This is an actionable piece of evidence, documenting a gross human rights violation.” According to Ben Emmerson QC, a human rights lawyer, the camps are designed specifically to isolate the Muslim Uighurs of Xinjiang as a separate cultural group.
This violation of individuality and beliefs continues to this day, systematically targeting Muslim minorities and brainwashing them under the facade of a voluntary education camp.
